Many people choose to get an artificial Christmas tree because it should outlast the two years’ worth (at best) of real trees that the same amount of investment could buy. Some people make the choice due to allergies, some because they hate constantly cleaning up fallen needles, or others because their personal style is better reflected by something nature isn’t going to grow. Others yet don’t choose an artificial Christmas tree so much as settle for one, because they live in a rental which does not allow the fire hazard which some zoning regions consider a real tree, kept indoors, to be. Whatever the reason for seeking one, the best way to get a cheap artificial Christmas tree is to NOT shop for one from any place selling them for the holidays.

As with many other things, a little foresight and planning can save a lot of money. People post perfectly good, free, artificial Christmas trees via websites like freecycle.org and the freebie section of craigslist.org, year-round – sometimes because they are moving and don’t want to lug one with them, sometimes because they are moving to a place with more or less room for a tree, and they are planning on either upgrading or downgrading. Businesses that used the trees to decorate their stores shut down, and organizations that used the trees to decorate their events lose their storage spaces. Sometimes one person offers a tree because they lost or damaged its stand, and another person offers a stand that outlasted the abuse their tree took. You never know why they might appear, but if you keep an eye out for them, you will probably find them.

If you don’t have regular enough internet access to trust to your luck over a year of free-classifieds browsing, then your next-best bet for a good deal is to shop the places selling artificial Christmas trees, but to NOT do so right before a Christmas. Instead, shop the Christmas clearance right AFTER the holidays, a year in advance. You still might not find your ideal tree on your first try, but 50% off something that’s normally that expensive is worth a little calling and driving around.
