How To Find Cheap Garden Flowers

Below are successful time-tested strategies to save money on your flowers.

  • Smaller Plants

Younger/smaller plants cost substantially less money than larger, more mature ones. In fact, you can save anywhere from 50% to 80%! You'll want to make sure the small plants have good root development; usually at least 2 to 3 large roots will do the trick.

  • Propagating Flowers

This is without a doubt the most cost effective way to grow flowers. Through propagation (or reproducing), you can grow additional flower plants from your existing plant. The cost is $0 - love it!

You can Google on "how to propagate flowers" for step by step methods. The key is you can continue to grow flowers from your existing plants for free..

  • Buy Off-Peak

Save a bundle by shopping for annual garden flowers off peak (early fall). Flower demand is much lower at this time and nurseries and stores will offer "deep discounts" to clear their inventory.

Don't forget you can also collect seeds in the early fall from neighbors or friends. All you'll be asking for is some dried up flower heads full of seeds!

Basic Garden Growing Tips

The basics or fundamentals as simple as they appear to be will make or break your flower garden.

First, when planting the garden, you'll want to be sure to leave a good amount of space between each flower plant; otherwise you'll have overcrowding which will hurt plant growth.

A good rule of thumb that our family uses is to base the amount of space between each plant on the mature plant size, then add another 3-4 inches. We've even gone as far as to measure plant width of various developed flowers at our local nursery and wrote down the width by flower type. It's worth the time and effort because it works!

Next, you'll want to plan out the type of flower garden or bed you want to grow based on your environment and needs. For example, do you want it to be low maintenance? What flowers grow best in your area; whether it humid, wet, dry? Is your ground soil more sandy or made of clay, etc.. We'd recommend researching for a good flower planning book based on your needs.

Finally, you'd be surprised how many people don't do this regularly. Please make sure you consistently water "and fertilize" your flowers. It's basic, but crucial to having flourishing flowers!
