Since the financial setback started a few years back, Christmas has become quite a stressful time for many families in America, as the increasing cost of living pushes up the cost of buying presents for friends and family. Fortunately, with a bit of thought and preparation, it’s easy to make cheap homemade Christmas gifts at a fraction of the cost of shop bought ones.

Food always makes for a good present, as it shows that you’ve put a lot of thought, time and effort into the gift. Each chef will always have their favorite dishes to cook, or dishes that people like to have cooked for them, so don’t be afraid to use these as presents. The offer of spending an evening eating dinner together is much more in tune with the current Christmas spirit of spending time with your loved ones than expressing your love materialistically. A tray or basket of baked goods will also go down well, as everyone likes a treat around the holiday season. Be sure to find out their favorite variety (and of course any allergies!) before you start to cook.

Other cheap Christmas gifts that can be made at home are usually the result of your favorite pastime or hobby. For some this may be origami, for others it may be knitting or woodworking. Whatever it is, make sure that it is something that the recipient will either put on display, or be able to use. The last thing they need is a present that has no value to them, but that they feel they can’t discard of as it was made specifically for them. For these kinds of presents, it’s often worth abandoning any pretence at surprise, and asking them outright if they like the idea of the gift before you start making it.
