The trick is to be one of the "first" in line. This is because the good stuff goes fast; and I'll tell you, you can get great deals at garage sales. The living room set was being sold because the owners were moving from a home into an apartment and didn't have enough room; and this is nice furniture. You can also get your hands on some dirt cheap furniture at thrift stores. Honestly, I haven't come across as good of furnishings at the thrifts as I regularly do at garage sales, but you can still get your hands on some good used items cheap. At the thrift, we purchased a used leather recliner for $55 that had a tear on one of the arms. We then paid $125 to have the arm professionally reupholstered. This was a $600 leather recliner that we now had for $180. You can also get great bargains through the furniture stores' clearance department. This can range from cheap patio furniture sets to affordable contemporary furniture. Many times these are very nice pieces that are no longer in the store's inventory; such as floor items. My family got a really nice kitchen table set on sale for 60% off. It was a floor item that had a knick on one of the table legs that was barely noticeable. Don't forget about looking in your local newspaper or Craigs List. Many times you can find great deals on sets; especially these days with the economy being as it is.
