Shape And Position

Energy efficient skylights come in a variety of shapes including circular, rectangular, oval and tubular to name a few.

You'll also find out that how you position your skylight will have a big impact on reducing your energy costs.

For example, mounting your skylight on your east-facing roof will provide you with the most light and heat in the morning (sun rises in the east). West-facing skylights will give you the benefit of more light and heat in the afternoon.

We've done both. We have our skylights on both the east and west-facing roofs to maximize our energy efficiency.

Skylight Financial Money Savings

We use tubular skylights because they're the best when it comes to reducing your energy costs. A tubular skylight is basically a roof mounted sunlight collector and projector.

In a nutshell, it pulls in the sunlight through an acrylic lens mounted outside on the roof into a diffuser lens mounted on your indoor ceiling. This spreads the light throughout your house.

You'll also want to go with the better quality glass units instead of the less energy efficient plastic glazing skylights.

What's wonderful is you'll find that you can purchase these skylights cheap. In fact, you'll find that many of them cost less than traditional lighting. You'll be looking from the $200 to $300 range.

By the way, you don't need to opt for the larger $500, $600 deluxe units because the basic models work very effectively; not to mention they cost less.

Other Skylight Cost Saving Benefits - Tubular Skylights

  • UV Rays

Tubular's filter out the suns UV rays which helps protect your furniture and carpet from wear and fading.

  • Warranties

You can typically get a nice warranty on tubular skylights. You should get at minimum a 10 year warranty.

  • Sun Generated Cost Savings

You can reap the savings benefit of not having an energy draining light bulb. Instead you can have your home lit up and heated by the sun.

Other Important Tips

Make sure your skylight is properly sealed to prevent dust buildup. The flashing should be seamless.

You'll also want to make sure your skylight has high reflectivity (at least 90%), which means better efficiency.
