I know that sounds like a crazy tip, but it definitely saves money on groceries at my house. I'm sure it works the opposite way in some households, but in mine this crazy tip works.
When my husband takes the grocery list to the store, he methodically walks through the aisles and gets the best price for each item on the list. He doesn't get distracted by pre-planning for other events while he's in the store. He rarely, if ever, comes home with anything not on the list.
I on the other hand will start off with good intentions and then see a grocery item that will remind me of an upcoming potluck that I need to bring a dish to and I'll buy a little of this or that (not on the list).
I'll come home with multiple things not on the original list and often we won't use those extras till a long time after and many times not even for the events those extras were intended for. This can result in waste and having to tailor future lists to accommodate using up the items that weren't supposed to be purchased in the first place.
We started saving a substantial amount of grocery money when I gave the grocery shopping duties to my husband.
