Homemade Baby Shower favors

by Maryann

Thinking of things to give to expecting parents at their Baby Shower is a whole lot easier than thinking of things to give out as Baby Shower favors. For one thing, there aren’t a whole lot of products out there that are more creative than a baby themed cellophane baggie full of pastel candy, and / or less likely to make it all the way home as keepsakes than giant plastic bobby pin themed name tags. For another thing, “Baby Shower” is a specialty market, which means it is going to be overpriced. For these reasons – and that of many a third trimester woman, especially if she is a first-time-mommy (those far more likely to be thrown baby showers), having a lot of fairly stationary time on her hands that she’d welcome passing distractedly with friends – I recommend homemade baby shower favors.

One project I liked required getting glass spice jars from Dollar Tree, getting a bunch of those old-fashioned rubber bottle nipples that stretch to fit tightly over the rims of bottles, (if you can’t find those, get the kind that normally fit under a plastic cap, and just lightly glue them on with white glue), stick a piece of curling ribbon around at the same time, and tie a tag to the curled ends which points out that there’s a candle in there and then getting some candle-making supplies from a craft store. Create within the glass bottles white wax for candles (which can be scented with candle perfume oils, if you like – there are obvious scents like vanilla, and more thematic scents like baby powder, or warm milk). Then, pop the nipples on over the open tops. Viola! They look like baby bottles, but they are really candles.

If you like, you can use paint pens to write something significant on the side. I recommend the paint pens which are intended for use on washable dishes, as they will prove most durable on the glass surface, as well as the least likely to start burning off from the heat radiating through the glass as the candle burns down.
