Household Budget Plan

The basic goal in making a monthly budget will be to identify the money coming in and the money going out of your home. That way, you’re in a better position to manage your money and save cash.

Of all the how to do a budget approaches I’ve tried, the best way I’ve found to get this started is by sitting down with pencil and paper in hand. You have to start somewhere, and this works.

First, you’ll need to look at all your money coming in each month. Write down all consistent sources of income that you bring into the home each month, whether it be tips, your net salary, rental income, small business income, you name it.

Pulling out your pay stubs, 1099’s and/or W2’s will help.

Again, you’ll want to make sure you’re looking at net numbers; your take home pay after taxes, medical, 401K etc.

Oh, and don’t forget to factor in the income brought home by your spouse or significant other. Every dime does count.

Step two: Write down all of your expenses. I know, easier said then done; but this should help.

Pull out your checkbook, your last 3 months of bank statements and your credit card statements. As you come across any expenses, just jot them down on paper. Don’t worry about the dollar amounts at this point.

Remember, right now we’re just mapping out your outline on making a home budget.
