Saving Energy At Home

  • Power Strips save power. By plugging your electronics into these surge protectors, you save stand-by mode energy when turning off the strip.
  • Thermostats, especially programmables’ will keep your power costs down. Take a look at programmable thermostats on frugal household tips for additional detail.
  • Hot Water Heater - Lowering the temperature on your hot water heater will save you unnecessary heating costs.
  • Full Loads - It's much more energy efficient to run a full load in your dishwasher and washing machine.

  • Water - Take short showers instead of baths. You'll use less heated water.
  • Insulation - This is so important. Having a properly insulated home will make a significant dent in cost savings for you.

Key areas to insulate are your flooring, attic, windows and doors. Be sure to seal any leaks by checking around your doors and windows for drafts.

You can add weather-stripping and caulk holes. You can also check for leaks where your outside pipes and ductwork connect with your home.

  • Heating System - You'll want to make sure you replace your furnace filter monthly during the fall/winter. With a good filter in it, your furnace will work less hard and run more efficiently.

Also, make sure you close vents in your house that you don't use. This will provide for better circulation of heat to your rooms with the most traffic.

  • Lights – I know, it’s simple, but you’d be surprised how often people forget to do this. You can save on your electricity costs by turning off the lights when leaving a room.

You can also consider using a motion activated light switch, energy efficient skylights and energy efficient outdoor lighting to really knock down your electricity costs.

  • Summary - Energy Saving House

I enjoyed sharing my tips on lowering energy costs with you. If put to use, you'll run your house more energy efficiently and benefit from additional home power savings.
