Frugal Meal Planning

You'll find that planning ahead is crucial to save money on food. My family grocery shops once a week and before we hit the store, we will write down a list of our cheap meals that we plan (our menu) on eating for the week.

You can do the same by putting together a grocery list based on your menu. This makes your shopping experience so much more organized and it eliminates impulse shopping and overspending!

By the way, while putting together your menu, don't forget to check ads to see what's on sale and check your coupons. Take a look at this thrifty coupon page for great money saving tips.

Also, make sure not to eat before you shop. I don't know about you, but when I shop hungry, I have a tendency to pick up more snacks than needed.

Other Frugal Food Tips

Purchase produce in season. It's all about supply and demand. When you buy in season, when the produce is plentiful, the cost is lower than if you bought out of season when it's in short supply.

Eat leftovers. My family will make a dinner meal that will last for at least two meals during the week; whether it's chili, a casserole or what have you.

Leftovers are great because they're already cooked; so they just need to be heated up and they're good to go. You'll find leftovers are also great for snacks!

Bag your lunch. This is a huge money saver. So many people eat out for lunch during the week which can easily add up anywhere from $100 to $150 a month.

Buy in bulk. So long as you use the product, you can save a great deal of cash buying in bulk.

Buy generic. Buying the store's product is usually significantly cheaper than purchasing the name brand product. In most cases you'll find the generic brand has the same ingredients as the brand product.
